Among them, two temporary pavilions by UN Studio and Zaha Hadid were installed in Millennium Park, hosting multimedia exhibitions about Chicago\u2019s future. Zaha Hadid Architects\u2019 pavilion, the capsule-shaped Burnham Pavilion, combined new formal concepts with memories of Burnham\u2019s bold, historic urban planning. The overlapping of spatial structures with hidden traces of the Burnham Plan were overlaid and inscribed within the structure to create a dynamic form that represents the continuation of Chicago\u2019s tradition of advanced architecture and engineering.<\/p>\n<p>    &#8212;<\/p>\n<h2>Technical Requirements Analysis &amp; Solution Context<\/h2>\n<p>The Burnham Pavilion project posed complex technical and contextual requirements:<\/p>\n<p>    * Revisiting history and shaping the future: A design was needed that honoured the visionary Burnham Plan, while also demonstrating regeneration and innovation at an urban scale, welcoming the future with innovative ideas and technologies.<\/p>\n<p>    * Temporary: As a temporary booth, the structure must be easy to install and disassemble after the exhibition period.<\/p>\n<p>    * Complex and expressive shapes: Requires the ability to create dynamic, organic and fluid shapes, without the constraints of traditional building materials.<\/p>\n<p>    * Interactivity: The building needs to host multimedia exhibits and attract attention, encouraging individuals to pause, orient themselves, and engage with the larger exhibition.<\/p>\n<p>    This setting calls for the use of materials that are capable of creating beautiful geometries and can be connected through stretch fabric as a reminder of Burnham&#039;s original ideas.<\/p>\n<p>    &#8212;<\/p>\n<h2>Technical Solutions<\/h2>\n<p>The capsule-shaped Burnham Pavilion is an architectural achievement, showcasing a fusion of historical ideas and modern techniques through tensile fabric materials.<\/p>\n<h3>Design and Philosophy<\/h3>\n<p>Burnham Pavilion capsule canopy design <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaha-hadid.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zaha Hadid Architects<\/a> continues Chicago\u2019s renowned tradition of cutting-edge architecture and engineering, on the scale of a temporary pavilion, while also referencing the organizational systems of the Burnham Plan. The structure is arranged diagonally in the early 20th century Chicago Plan. Fabric is then draped using contemporary 21st century techniques to create fluid, organic forms \u2013 while the structure is always connected via tension fabric as a reminder of Burnham\u2019s original ideas. As Zaha Hadid has said: \u201cFabric is both a traditional and a high-tech material whose form is directly related to the forces acting on it \u2013 creating beautiful geometries that are never arbitrary. I find this very exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Materials and Functions<\/h3>\n<p>The idea of using fabric to cover the capsule-shaped Burnham Pavilion is to create a light, bright structure that is beautiful from every angle, inside and out. Unlike other construction mediums, fabric can create dynamic, undulating shapes, and this building really showcases what is possible with fabric-supported structures. The semi-translucent nature of the pavilion reduces the need for interior lighting, while also allowing light and images to be transmitted to the surface, making the projects almost completely self-sufficient in daylight. This optimizes the multimedia exhibition space and creates a striking visual effect.<\/p>\n<p>    &#8212;<\/p>\n<h2>Results and Performance Evaluation<\/h2>\n<p>The capsule-shaped Burnham Pavilion successfully realized the vision of the Burnham Centennial Plan. The ability to create dynamic, organic shapes with fabric, combined with the hidden footprints of the Burnham Plan, created a unique space that attracts attention and encourages interaction.
