Project Overview: Construction of skylight roof using Flying Mast structure
Project skylight roof is a high-tech tensile membrane architectural solution, designed to cover a large-scale atrium space. The project applies a unique 'flying mast' structure, suspended by a cable system, to create an ultra-light conical roof, ensuring both lighting and ventilation functions, and being an impressive architectural highlight for the interior space.
- Category: Architectural Canopy for Skylight/Atrium

Technical Requirements Analysis & Project Context
The project was implemented with the aim of shielding the atrium area without losing its core functions of lighting and ventilation. The main technical requirements include:
- Maintain Natural Ventilation: The roof should not completely cover the skylight, there must be a design solution that allows hot air to escape, maintaining and enhancing the air convection effect for the building.
- Providing Diffused Light: It must block out rain and harsh direct sunlight, but at the same time allow natural light to diffuse through softly, creating a bright, pleasant space, avoiding the greenhouse effect.
- Ultra-Lightweight and Minimalist Construction: Because it is installed high up and connected to existing structures, the roofing system must have a minimum self-weight to avoid overloading and must have a graceful appearance when viewed from below.
- Architectural Aesthetics from the Inside: The view from the interior floors towards the atrium area was the most important aesthetic element, requiring a sculptural and unique design.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
To meet the above complex requirements, a tensile membrane structural solution with a “flying column” design was selected and implemented.
Flying Mast Structural Solution
The innovative technical solution is a ‘flying column’ structure. Instead of using a ground-mounted support, a single steel column is suspended and stabilized in the center of the atrium by a system of high-strength steel cables, anchored to the surrounding solid roof structure. This steel column acts as a high point, raising the top of the conical membrane. This solution completely eliminates the need for supporting structures from below, creating a completely open atrium space and a unique ‘floating’ visual effect.
Design Optimizes Ventilation and Lighting
The canopy is designed in a conical shape with a calculated gap at the top, around the 'flying column'. This gap allows hot air from the lower floors to rise and escape, creating a chimney effect that enhances natural air convection throughout the building. Tensile membrane materials with high light transmittance are selected to ensure that light is evenly diffused, avoiding glare and heat gain.
High Performance Stretch Film Materials
Using high-grade PVDF or PTFE stretch film material, which is UV resistant, long-lasting and light weight. This is the foundation material for projects Stretch canvas structure modern, especially for skylight applications where high demands are placed on both durability and optical performance.
Results and Performance Evaluation
Project skylight roof Upon completion, it provided a superior architectural and technical solution, enhancing the spatial quality of the entire building:
- Technically: The “flying column” structural solution has proven effective in creating a super light, stable and safe roof system without the need for ground support columns.
- About function: The project excellently meets both requirements: effectively shielding from rain and sun, while maintaining and enhancing the ventilation and natural lighting capabilities of the skylight.
- Aesthetically: The canopy has become an interior sculpture, creating an impressive and unique architectural highlight, enhancing the aesthetic value of the common space.
- On space efficiency: The complete removal of supporting columns has kept the skylight space absolutely airy, maintaining open views between floors.
