The project includes the design and construction of a roof (architectural canopy) Light structure at shopping mall at Porto Chino in Thailand. The original design of this form of central canopy was proposed to be metal. However, the architect appointed by the investor, after learning about stretch membrane structures, highly appreciated that this material would be the perfect choice for his project. So we had the opportunity to propose a design architectural roof replaced by using a stretch canvas structure.

In Thailand, today the concept of shopping mall planning and design has changed from the concentration of large multi-storey shopping malls in one building which has been replaced by many compact low-rise floors with many spaces. outdoor spaces and open space functions. That's why many malls are called 'Lifestyle Malls'.

Most of these projects are central or common areas and these areas are always in need of these architectural roof to protect people from sun and rain. Although there are many options for roof structures with such large spans, architectural roof Flexiiform stretch canvas always provides excellent solutions with elegant shapes at the same time, enhancing the image of shopping malls.

The process of designing the stretch canvas architectural canopy lifestyle shopping malls Portochino

As climate change combined with global warming becomes more and more impactful on our lives, architects need to think deeper in their ideas and come up with thoughtful solutions. carefully to minimize this problem as far as possible. Porto Chino is designed based on the Eco-Green Concept.

Accordingly, the architects wanted to get rid of air conditioning. They also want to preserve the most valuable resource in the tropics – natural ventilation. The shopping center was planned to be spread over a number of separate blocks. Each block of the shopping center is placed in different locations and does not obstruct others from the main wind direction. Car parking areas are located behind the buildings.

All interesting landscapes and architectural canopy design bA series of eye-catching lifestyle shopping malls are placed in front as if to welcome customers and guests. Instead of running air conditioning all day, today shopping centers become separate industrial stores. So having segregated energy is easier to manage and can reduce budget from public spaces. The interesting problem is how to connect all the small stores to become a single shopping center without placing them all within a four-wall perimeter.

Therefore, stretch canvas awnings became the best choice at that time to give them a common identity. With a large span (nearly 40m for the project), this structure provides a space for public areas. The shape resembles an inverse flower that blooms in spring with a transparent layer in the center creating a light effect with natural light and this serves as a land mark for this shopping mall.

With project construction scale architectural roof Hey, Fastech Co. to make it as simple as possible to create contrast between the crowded space below and the cladding above. People have a lot of activities to do when they stroll and shop in the mall and whenever they look up, a simple and soft large white membrane will give them a relaxed, easy feeling. bear.

The transparent light in the middle not only takes advantage of bright natural light in the morning requiring less artificial light, but it also saves a lot of energy. This transparent area of the roof also becomes a beautiful feature at night with diffused light shining up into the dark sky. So the central point of architectural roof has become a notable land of shopping malls.

How does the issue of air convection determine the form of the architectural canopy of Portochino shopping malls?

This process involves determining the appropriate external forces or pressures acting on the surface architectural roof shopping malls. The difficult part is getting the right amount of pressure caused by wind loads since the shape of the membrane structure is often irregular with respect to Cp (i.e. wind pressure coefficient) which cannot be found in any design code. standard.

In this project, first the Cp value was assigned to the surface assuming this to be in the form of a cone, but the result was unsatisfactory. However, there were two other alternative methods we could use. The first is Wind Tunnel Testing by making a physical scale model of the membrane structure and the second is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using computer models of both the structure and the loading for analysis.

The first method seems possible, but it would be expensive and time-consuming. Therefore, we finally decided to use the CFD method to generate Cp for the membrane surface and perform analysis. The CFD method gives lower values of Cp than what is obtained from the assumption of some shape (e.g. cone) and the use of code standard design.

There are four simulated wind directions: North, East, South and West, and the maximum values of Cp are used to analyze the response from the surface to the structural support. In addition to determining Cp, there is an additional benefit of using the CFD method; it allows us to check whether the wind is blowing inside the building through the central void.
