Current Situation and Solution: Design of Tensioned Canvas Canopy for Vinfast Car Showroom - Pioneering Architecture Class
In an effort to reach global reach and introduce a pioneering electric car line, VinFast aims to build a series of modern showrooms in strategic markets. These showrooms are not only a space to display products but also must demonstrate the brand's class and philosophy of combining engineering, technology and pioneering. Surpassing nearly 1,000 entries from 90 countries, Flexiiform was honored to be in the Top 50 entries winning the Consolation award in the 2021 Global VinFast Showroom Design Competition. The requirement is a modern, classy showroom design that can create a strong visual impression, while optimizing display functionality and customer experience. This context requires an architectural solution that is not only beautiful but also demonstrates the intersection of engineering and technology, reflecting VinFast's product development philosophy, while being sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Technical Solutions
Flexiiform has applied the canvas roof of Vinfast car showroom into the design idea, with a comprehensive, meaningful and innovative technical solution.
Design concept and meaning
Understanding the importance of the canopy in the showroom, especially for a big brand like VinFast, the Flexiiform design team came up with the idea for an oval-shaped canopy for the Vinfast car showroom using Tensile Fabric structure, combined with a glass paneling solution that follows the roof arch, elegant but no less luxurious. The design meaning is built on the following factors:
- Concept: Inspired by the oval-shaped moving circle image in the atomic symbol and the image of the sun (meaning origin and spread), representing electricity promoting social development and VinFast is a pioneering brand that inspires a modern, dynamic, creative, intelligent and smart Vietnam.
- Form: The oval shape was chosen not only because of its special morphology and the advantage of "cheating" on the layout area, but also because this shape helps the showroom to circulate the wind more smoothly and regularly, increasing the stability of the structure under the impact of weather compared to round or rectangular shapes.
- Highlight the central element: The choice of a round sun image as the ceiling placed in the middle of the oval form of the showroom helps highlight VinFast's central product - a line of smart self-driving electric cars of level 3-4. Flexiiform uses a translucent stretch ceiling for this area, creating a strong effect for the key product unit, as a highlight of the showroom theme.
- Application of environmentally friendly technology and materials: The solution uses Membrane Structure - a breakthrough material structure in the lightweight materials industry, in line with VinFast's product development philosophy on lightweight material structure, technology application and environmental friendliness. Thanks to research and application of stress calculation technology between reinforced fabric material and steel frame along with special connecting components, it is possible to create any architectural form without being limited by the load-bearing structure. Environmental friendliness is demonstrated through quick installation and reinforced fabric material treated with TiO2 layer (reference) – helps to easily carry dirt away into the outside environment, creating a fertilizer compound that makes nature lush.
Flexiiform decided to apply the canvas roof of the Vinfast car showroom to this large-scale design, with the hope of helping the country's architecture make its mark on the world design map.
Components of the roofing system
The canvas roof system for Vinfast car showroom is composed of the following technical components:
- Double skin: To create stability and minimize the steel frame system for the showroom, Flexiiform used 2 layers of roof. The outer roof is coated with PVDF for water and sun protection. The inner roof is a high translucent fabric to allow light (hidden between the two layers) to pass through, creating a soft lighting effect. This double skin roof also cuts down on energy waste from the difference between the temperature inside and outside.
- Structural frame: To create a stable steel frame structure for the car showroom canvas roof system and ceiling system, Flexiiform uses 2 oval frames connected by small steel pipes evenly distributed, to take advantage of creating a canopy roof system for the outside lobby. In addition, to increase the shape and stable connection, Flexiiform also arranges an additional frame system with a slight curvature to support the load-bearing part of the canvas roof, at the same time this is also the basic frame system for the pillars inside the showroom.
- Cable pull: To strengthen the frame and help create the concept of a drop ceiling, a tension cable system is used to store the form and maintain stability. From these points, it is possible to minimize the number of columns used to support the roof. Overall, 6 columns are used to divide the structure evenly and distribute it reasonably, focusing on stability, aesthetics and ventilation for the interior space.

Flexiiform's design of the Vinfast car showroom canopy not only meets VinFast's strict requirements but also exceeds expectations in terms of symbolism and technical efficiency. The use of an oval-shaped fabric structure combined with glass not only creates a unique, modern appearance, reflecting the class of the pioneering electric vehicle brand, but also optimizes aerodynamic factors and light distribution. The ability to highlight the central product with a translucent effect and integrate environmentally friendly technology are outstanding strengths. This design proves that lightweight materials and fabric architecture can completely create works of international stature, contributing to raising the level of Vietnamese architecture on the world map.
