Design background of the Cloud dock canopy
Originally developed for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Cloud is a semi-permanent, multi-purpose event and exhibition structure on Queen's Wharf in Auckland, New Zealand. Nearly 600 feet long, the Cloud can hold up to 6,000 people.
To bring the architects' designs for the final structural form to life, we created a series of similarly shaped structural frames so that they could be efficiently fabricated. fruit. By varying the height and angle of these trusses, we achieved the organic shape of the Cloud that the architect envisioned.
THE CLOUD Wharf COVER
Coated PES fabric is used to fabricate roofs, both for speed and ease of installation as well as for durability, ability to take desired shapes and self-cleaning qualities. The wall panels and roof panels of the north mezzanine are made of ETFE, creating a window-like appearance. The entrances along the base of the building are aluminum composite panels, and PES-coated ceiling panels were installed on both the south entrance and the north mezzanine. The panels are stretched with powder-coated aluminum profiles.
Because the project was on a tight timeline, installation started at the center and worked its way to both sides, so that the two installation teams could work simultaneously. The limited load-carrying capacity of the over 100-year-old wharf required balancing the structural mezzanine columns with the mezzanine columns of the existing wharf.
