Current Situation and Solutions: The Development of Tensioned Sports Stadiums in Vietnam – Trends and Potentials
In the past, the construction of sports stadiums often faced major challenges such as high investment costs, long construction periods and cumbersome structures. However, with the advent of tensile membrane structures, these problems have been effectively solved. Tension membrane sports stadiums are now built quickly, flexibly and multi-purpose, suitable for many different types of sports such as football, tennis, badminton and more. Vietnam, with its rapid economic development and increasing demand for sports, is witnessing an explosion of potential tension membrane sports stadium projects. This is not only a trend but also a feature of modernity and convenience in the country's sports industry.
Technical Requirements & Context Analysis
The growing sports industry and the need for modern, multi-purpose sports facilities are driving the search for optimal construction solutions. Traditional stadiums with solid roofs often require huge investment costs for foundations and heavy steel structures, long construction times and limited adjustment capabilities. This makes it difficult to develop large-scale sports infrastructure, especially in localities with limited budgets. The technical challenge is to find a solution that is lightweight, durable, safe, and can effectively shield against harsh weather conditions, while providing high aesthetic value and flexibility in use. Tensioned canvas sports stadiums were born to fully meet these requirements.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
The solution to build a tensioned canvas sports stadium is based on the application of high-tech tensioned canvas materials and advanced design and construction processes.
Technical Benefits of Stadiums Using Tension Fabric Structures
Tension fabric structures offer many technical and economic benefits for sports stadiums:
- 1/ Cost Savings: Tension fabric structures significantly reduce construction costs compared to traditional stadiums, especially the costs of foundations and steel frames. This makes stadium construction more budget-friendly and easier for businesses and authorities to put the structure into operation.
- 2/ Flexible and Multifunctional: Tensioned canvas sports stadiums can be easily adjusted in size and shape due to the flexible nature of the fabric material. This makes the stadium suitable for many different types of sports (football, tennis, badminton, etc.) and facilitates the organization of major sporting events and tournaments.
- 3/ Aesthetics and Modernity: Tension fabric structures bring a modern and unique aesthetic to sports stadiums. With their soft curves and impressive formability, they are a symbol of progress and style, attracting attention from both locals and international visitors.
- 4/ Sustainability and Environmental Protection: Tensioned fabric structures are often made from durable materials such as PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) or PVDF (Polyvinylidene Fluoride), which are resistant to UV rays, wind, and rain. At the same time, these materials are easy to recycle, helping to protect the environment and prolong the life of sports stadiums.
- 5/ Short Construction Time: Tension fabric structures can be prefabricated and quickly installed on site, saving significant construction time and allowing sports stadiums to be put into operation sooner.
Results and Performance Evaluation
The application of tensile fabric structures in the construction of sports stadiums in Vietnam not only brings economic benefits but also promotes the development of the domestic sports industry. The flexibility, cost savings and aesthetics of these stadiums will certainly be a great source of encouragement for people to participate in sports activities and help promote the sports movement in the community.
Some Potential Stadiums In Vietnam In The Future Using Tension Fabric Structures
Vietnam has many potential sports stadium projects applying tensile fabric structures, promising to bring a new look to the sports industry:
1/ An Giang Provincial Stadium
The new An Giang Province Stadium will be built in My Hoa Ward, Long Xuyen City. The architects chose the image of rice plants to design the project, creating an architectural highlight of the Southwest region. The stadium facade is decorated with rice leaf-shaped structures, and the stadium roof made of PTFE material will cover the two main stands. The stadium has a total capacity of 20,000 spectators, modern lighting and sound systems, and a high-quality grass field that meets international competition requirements.
Image of An Giang Sports Stadium 2/ Bac Kan Provincial Stadium
Inspired by the rice husk boats in the legend of Ba Be Lake. The two sides of the main stands will be designed with PVDF/PTFE stadium roofs like sails overcoming the waves, combined with the shape of the famous Lung Nham mountain range. The project is expected to have a total area of about 20 hectares, a capacity of about 15,000 spectators, with a total investment of 396 billion VND, meeting international football competition standards.
Bac Kan Stadium 3/ Hang Day Stadium, Hanoi
The new Hang Day Stadium will be designed with 4 underground floors (public parking) and 2 above ground floors (stadium area). The new stadium will have a square single-storey grandstand covered with a PVDF roof that meets FIFA standards, a total capacity of 20,000 spectators, with a high-quality grass surface and lighting system. The total estimated construction cost is 250 million euros.
Hang Day Stadium, Hanoi 4/ Quang Ngai Provincial Stadium
Designed by the famous Ho Thieu Tri Architects, the stadium is the centerpiece of the Quang Ngai Province Sports Complex. The entire facade of the stadium will be seamless with the roof of the A stand, which is expected to be installed with high-quality PTFE tarpaulin material. The stadium has a total capacity of 20,000 spectators, with LED screens at the C stand and a modern lighting system, and the pitch uses high-quality needle grass.
Quang Ngai Stadium 5/ Thai Nguyen Provincial Stadium
Under construction in Phuc Trieu commune, Thai Nguyen city. The stadium was designed by DCCD company with the idea of a thousand-year-old flower, formed by structures like spreading leaves. The stadium roof system is simple, low-cost, and has a strong shape. The project is expected to install all single seats in the stands with a total capacity of 22,000 spectators, along with modern equipment ensuring international standards, expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Thai Nguyen Stadium 6/ Thanh Hoa Provincial Stadium
Designed by DAC Architectural Design and Consulting Company, with the image of a turtle and a lotus symbolizing the land of talented people. The new Thanh Hoa Stadium has a popular design in Vietnamese football fields, with the highlight being the large steel arch structure supporting the roof of the A stand. The four structures represent four lotus platforms at the four corners of the stand, with a total capacity of 30,000 spectators. The stadium is built with advanced engineering technology, sustainable PVDF/PTFE materials, environmentally friendly, highly automated and energy-saving.
Thanh Hoa Stadium 7/ Vinh Yen Stadium, Vinh Phuc province
Vinh Yen Stadium will be built on an area of 46,562 square meters in Vinh Yen city. The stadium uses solid and hollow blocks combined with corridor railings to create vertical and horizontal divisions, with many airy windows. The gray-blue and white color blocks create a modern and lively project. The project has an elliptical shape to optimize the layout of the stadium, save space and reduce investment scale but still fully meet the needs of use. The stadium has two symmetrical stands, equipped with a roof, the entire stand will be installed with single seats with a total capacity of about 15,000 spectators.
