Why Medina Piazza project chooses smart roofing – Medina Square Roofing
Few pilgrims miss the opportunity to visit the Holy Mosque of the Prophet in Medina after the hajj is over. Despite two expansions in the second half of the 20th century, the mosque was often underfilled and people gathered on the square in front of its walls to pray. As a result, plans to partially cover this outdoor space outside the mosque complex began as soon as the new construction was finally completed.
Based on the design for the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque, SL Rasch has developed a new umbrella with an innovative folding arm system with six hinges. The umbrellas are also of two different heights. This allows their membranes to overlap to create a continuous canopy – forming Medina Square canopy
Besides providing long-lasting protection from weather and UV radiation, Teflon fabric (or PTFE) of Medina Square canopy Specially developed to be stain and abrasion resistant, as well as offering the important benefit of high tensile strength. The material is also incredibly soft, supple and drapes attractively. The tapes and seams are highlighted in colour to add a floral quality to the funnel-like films.
When folded Medina Square canopyThese membranes are protected from sand and wind by panels made of glass-fiber reinforced composite. They are decorated with elaborate mosaics made of weather-resistant glass tiles, in harmony with the architecture of the mosque.

Medina Piazza Square canopy The convertible dome provides a sheltered space of exquisite architectural quality for up to 250,000 people. The play of light created by the translucent membrane dome creates a unique atmosphere in this special place and invites pilgrims to linger, pray and socialize.
The cells (Covered Medina Piazza) arranged in groups of two to 15. The gaps in the main axis allow unobstructed views of the mosque and minarets and thus provide orientation. This unique lightweight structure – the largest convertible roof in the world – has won SL Rasch the generous Abdullatif-Al-Fozan Prize for Mosque Architecture.
