Project Overview: Construction of mezzanine roof at CBS Building
Project atrium at the CBS Building is a large-scale tensile membrane architectural solution, designed to cover the entire central atrium area. The project uses a steel dome structure and specialized tensile membrane, not only meeting the requirements of shielding from weather elements but also optimizing natural light, improving acoustics and ensuring safety for common living spaces.
- Investor: CBS Building (Chulabhorn Broadcasting Service)
- Category: Architectural canopy for atrium/skylight area
- Structure: Steel arch and PVDF membrane structure system
- Main materials: PVDF stretch film with high light transmittance, steel truss structure
- Location: Bangkok, Thailand (Assumption)
Technical Requirements Analysis & Project Context
The project was implemented with the aim of transforming the atrium space into a multi-purpose area that can operate in all weather conditions while still maintaining the superior characteristics of the atrium. The main technical requirements include:
- Over the Big Span: The roof structure must be able to span the entire span of the skylight without any supporting columns in between, ensuring the space below is completely clear.
- Optimizing Natural Light: The main function of a skylight is to provide light. Therefore, the roofing material must have a suitable translucent level so that natural light can diffuse evenly to the lower floors, avoiding darkness and glare.
- Ultra-lightweight construction: The new roofing solution must have low self-weight so as not to overload the existing load-bearing structure of the building.
- Safety and Acoustics: The roof material must be safer than glass (avoiding the risk of breakage), and must also have sound absorption capabilities to reduce echoes in a large, high space.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
To meet the above requirements, a steel arch structural solution combined with a high performance tensile membrane was selected.
Barrel Vault Structure Design
The technical solution chosen was a barrel vault. The roof is made up of a series of curved steel trusses, placed parallel to each other to span the large aperture of the skylight. Tension membrane panels are installed and stretched between these trusses. This design is highly structurally efficient for rectangular spaces and creates a high, airy interior space.
High Performance PVDF Stretch Film Material
The covering material is PVDF (Polyester coated with PVC) stretch film. The PVDF coating provides UV resistance, anti-fouling and long life. The translucency of the material is selected at an optimal level, allowing about 20-40% of natural light to pass through. This creates a diffuse, uniform, glare-free light source, helping to save on lighting costs. The soft surface of the film also has a sound-absorbing effect, significantly reducing echoes in the atrium space.
Safety and Installation
Compared to glass roofs, tensile membranes have outstanding safety advantages. In the event of an object impact, the elastic surface of the membrane will withstand better and will not create dangerous fragments. The installation process is carried out using prefabricated components, allowing for quick and safe construction at height. This is a comprehensive solution of architectural stretch canvas for public space
Results and Performance Evaluation
Project atrium at CBS Building successfully transformed the atrium space into a highly valuable functional area:
- About function: Turn the atrium space into a large covered hall that can be used for activities and events in all weather conditions, increasing the effective usable area of the building.
- About the quality of interior space: Provides an environment with high quality natural light, uniform and pleasant. At the same time, the acoustic quality is significantly improved, the space becomes quieter.
- About safety: Tension membrane solutions offer a higher level of safety than traditional rigid roof solutions.
- On structural efficiency: The use of ultra-lightweight structures has met the requirement of not overloading existing structures, proving technical and cost-effective.
