Project Overview: Construction of school canvas roof at LFI Duras
Project school stretch canvas roof at the French International School Lycée Français International Marguerite Duras (LFI Duras) is an architectural solution designed to create a continuous covered corridor, connecting the main entrance to the main walkway of the school. The project solves the complex requirements of shielding function, architectural aesthetics and safety standards specific to the educational environment.
- Investor: Lycée Français International Marguerite Duras
- Category: Architectural canopies for walkways and main gates
- Structure: Free-form tensile membrane structure system
- Main materials: Serge Ferrari (France) PVDF stretch membrane, steel structure
- Location: District 9, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Technical Requirements Analysis & Project Context
In order to renovate and upgrade the facilities, LFI Duras set out the requirements to design a new roofing system for the main gate area with specific technical and functional criteria:
- Seamless spatial connection: Requires a single, continuous, gap-free roof system, forming a complete covered corridor from the entrance to the main walkway.
- Ensure clear height: The canopy must have a high enough clearance height to allow specialized vehicles such as fire trucks to pass easily in an emergency.
- Unique architectural aesthetics: The design had to be iconic, modern, and appropriate for an international educational environment. The chosen concept was a “spontaneous stroke” that felt soft and continuous.
- High Durability and Safety: The structure must be carefully calculated to ensure absolute safety for students and staff, have a long life and be able to withstand the Vietnamese climate.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
To realize a complex design idea and meet strict technical requirements, Flexiiform implemented a professional and precise working process.
Free-Form Structural Design
The chosen solution is a free-form tensile membrane structure, simulating a continuous “stroke” or “silk strip”, connecting the space from the outer gate to the inside. This design not only meets aesthetic requirements but also solves the functional problem by eliminating gaps, creating a completely covered corridor. The curving shape is also optimized to ensure drainage and aerodynamic stability.
Technical Material: Serge Ferrari PVDF stretch film
The chosen covering material is high-grade PVDF membrane from Serge Ferrari (France). This is a composite material with a reinforced polyester core and a double-sided PVDF coating, with a long design life. This coating provides UV resistance, anti-fouling and waterproofing, ensuring durability and aesthetics in the Vietnamese climate. This is the standard material for constructions. architectural stretch canvas.
Precise Engineering and Construction Process
The implementation process is strictly controlled through professional technical steps to ensure absolute accuracy:
- Structural Analysis: Engineers use specialized software to analyze and calculate the types of loads acting on the structure (wind, static load, live load), thereby optimizing the design of the frame and foundation system.
- Coordinate Survey (Total Station): Due to the uneven foundation elevation, an independent total station is used to determine the exact XYZ coordinates of each installation location, ensuring that the manufactured frame system will completely match reality.
- Precision machining at the factory: Based on total station data and technical drawings, the entire steel frame and tensile membrane system is fabricated at the factory, helping to control quality and minimize on-site editing work.
- Installation and Stretching: The frame is transported to the construction site for erection. The membrane is then deployed and tensioned to the calculated tension to ensure the shape and long-term stability of the structure.
Results and Performance Evaluation
Project school stretch canvas roof Upon completion, the project has brought about a comprehensive transformation of the main gate area of LFI Duras, fully meeting the set objectives:
- About function and safety: Create a seamless covered corridor that protects students from sun and rain while ensuring fire truck height standards are met.
- Aesthetically: The project has become a new, modern and unique architectural symbol, enhancing the appearance and image of the school.
- About construction techniques: The application of total station survey and workshop processing has proven to be highly effective, ensuring accuracy and shortening construction time.
- About durability: The use of premium materials from Serge Ferrari ensures a sustainable, long-lasting and low-maintenance solution.
