Project Overview: Construction of walkway canopy system at TFNG Park
Project walkway canopy at TFNG Park is a landscape architectural solution, applying tensile membrane structure to create a covered corridor, connecting outdoor spaces. The project is designed not only to meet the function of sun and rain protection but also acts as a series of sculptures, creating aesthetic highlights and enhancing the user experience in public spaces.
- Investor: TFNG Park Management Board (Assumption)
- Category: Canopy for main walkway
- Structure: Hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) tensile membrane module system
- Main materials: PVDF stretch membrane, steel structure, cable system and load-bearing accessories
- Location: Bangkok, Thailand (Assumption)
Technical Requirements Analysis & Project Context
The project was implemented with the aim of creating a continuous covered corridor, connecting functional areas in the park, and at the same time being an architectural item with high aesthetic value. The main technical requirements include:
- Shielding function: The canopy must ensure effective sun and rain protection for pedestrians along the entire corridor.
- Elegant structure, expanding space: A structural solution was needed that could span the span, using as few supporting columns as possible so as not to affect the landscape and views in the park.
- Aesthetic and uniform design: A highly recognizable design language that can be repeated in modular form is needed to create consistency over a long route and avoid monotony.
- Interaction with the environment: Roofing materials need to be able to allow a certain amount of natural light to pass through, enough for the vegetation below to grow, maintaining green space.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
To meet the above requirements, Flexiiform proposed a comprehensive technical solution, using modular tensile membrane structures.
Sail Module Structure Design (Hypar)
The chosen technical solution is a series of four-point hyperbolic paraboloid (hypar) canopy modules, also known as sail/kite shapes. Each module consists of a central steel column and lower anchor points at the edges, creating a dynamic, undulating form. The repetition of these modules creates a unique architectural rhythm along the walkway, while optimizing structural efficiency and installation procedures.
Technical Material: PVDF stretch film
The covering material is PVDF stretch film, which is lightweight, has high tensile strength and long service life. Most importantly, this material is translucent, allowing some daylight to diffuse through. This property prevents the space below from becoming dark, creating a comfortable and sufficient lighting environment for vegetation to continue to grow. This is an outstanding technical advantage of Tensile membrane architecture compared to traditional roofing materials.
Bearing and Connection Systems
The main load-bearing system consists of precision-machined steel columns and high-strength steel cable systems. Connecting details such as membrane clamps and turnbuckles are specially designed to ensure that the tension on the membrane surface is evenly distributed, helping to maintain the architectural shape and ensure the stability of the structure against the impact of wind and rain.
Results and Performance Evaluation
Project walkway canopy After completion, the park space has been comprehensively upgraded in terms of function and aesthetics:
- About function: Provide a continuous covered corridor, protecting pedestrians from the elements, encouraging outdoor walking and recreation activities.
- In terms of architecture: Create an iconic landscape architectural line, becoming a unique and attractive highlight for the park.
- On ecological efficiency: Maintain natural light for the trees below, ensuring the sustainable development of the park ecosystem.
- About user experience: The walkway space becomes more interesting, providing shaded resting spots, improving the quality of people's experience when coming to the park.
