Project Overview: Resort Roof Construction at Victoria Angkor, Siem Reap
Project resort canopy at Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa, Siem Reap is a unique architectural solution, harmoniously combining traditional wooden structures and modern tensile membrane materials. The project is designed for terrace areas, to create outdoor utility spaces that both have a shielding function and bring high aesthetic value, in line with the Indochinese architectural style of the resort.
- Investor: Victoria Angkor Resort & Spa
- Category: Architectural canopy for patio area
- Structure: Wood frame structure and PVDF membrane roof system
- Main materials: PVDF stretch membrane, load-bearing wood structure, steel and cable
- Location: Siem Reap, Cambodia

Technical Requirements Analysis & Project Context
The project was developed with the aim of creating covered outdoor spaces that are both comfortable for visitors and in sync with the resort’s distinctive French and Khmer colonial architectural language. The main technical requirements include:
- Harmonious Aesthetics: The most important requirement is that the new roofing solution must have a design and materials that are in harmony with the existing wood structure and architectural style, creating a unified, luxurious whole.
- Lightweight Structure: A roofing solution with low self-weight is needed to be easily integrated into the wooden structure system, avoiding the need to use wooden components with too large cross-sections, causing a heavy feeling.
- Optimizing Open Space: The design needed to be able to span to create spacious terrace spaces, unobstructed by columns, maximizing usable area and views of the landscape.
- Durability and Efficient Construction: Materials must be durable and resistant to tropical climates. The construction process must be quick and efficient so as not to greatly affect the resort's operations.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
To meet the above requirements, a hybrid architectural solution was chosen, combining the advantages of wood structures and tensile membrane materials.
Hybrid Structural Design: Wood and Tensile Membrane
The technical solution is a unique hybrid structural system. The main load-bearing system uses a traditional wooden structure, creating a cozy feeling and completely in sync with the overall architecture of the resort. However, instead of using roof tiles or other heavy roofing materials, the roof covering is completely replaced by a super-light tensile membrane system.

Technical Material: PVDF stretch film
The tensile membrane material is a high-grade PVDF, which is UV resistant, insulating and waterproof. The use of this material significantly reduces the self-weight of the roof system, allowing the underlying wooden structure to be designed more elegantly. The PVDF coating also ensures a long life and requires little maintenance. This is a smart material application solution of Stretch canvas structure.
Dedicated Link System
To connect the modern tensile membrane to the traditional timber structure, steel connecting details and specialized stainless steel cables were used. This system ensures that the tension force is transferred from the membrane to the timber structure safely and effectively, while creating exquisite architectural details, adding aesthetic value to the project.
Results and Performance Evaluation
Project resort canopy At Victoria Angkor, we have successfully created outdoor utility spaces that meet aesthetic and functional criteria:
- Aesthetically: The unique combination of materials has created an architectural space that is both traditional and modern, receiving high appreciation from customers and professionals.
- About function and experience: Providing cool, covered terrace spaces that protect guests from the sun and rain while still maintaining an open, natural feel.
- On structural efficiency: The ultra-light roof solution has proven effective in reducing loads, allowing the use of a sleek and elegant wooden frame system.
- About construction efficiency: The use of lightweight, flexible components helps the construction process take place quickly, minimizing disruption to resort operations.
