Project Overview: Installation of skylight sliding roof system at Bangkok Hospital
Project Skylight sliding roof at Bangkok Hospital is a large-scale retractable roof solution, designed to cover the central atrium area of the hospital. The project applies tensile membrane technology and an automated mechanical system, allowing flexible conversion between open and covered spaces, meeting the high requirements for functionality, safety and comfort for the medical environment.
- Investor: Bangkok Hospital
- Category: Retractable canopy for atrium/central hall
- Structure: Steel arch frame and retractable PVDF membrane system
- Operating system: Electric motor and slide rail system
- Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Technical Requirements Analysis & Project Context
The project was implemented to optimize the central atrium space, turning it into a multi-purpose area that can be used for many different activities. The technical and operational requirements for the hospital environment are very strict:
- Flexibility in operation: Requires a roof system that can be easily opened to take advantage of natural light and ventilation on nice weather days, and quickly closed when it is hot or rainy.
- Maximum safety: In a hospital environment, safety is paramount. The roofing solution must be superior to hard materials such as glass, avoiding the risk of cracking and falling dangerous debris.
- Acoustic control: Large skylights with surrounding hard surfaces can easily cause echoes. The canopy needs to be able to absorb sound and reduce noise to create a quiet, pleasant environment.
- Ensure natural light: Even when closed, the canopy should still allow natural light to diffuse through to keep the space below bright, creating a positive feeling for patients and visitors.
- Durability and reliability: The mechanical system must operate stably and durably through thousands of open/close cycles.
Technical Solutions and Implementation Process
To meet the above complex requirements, Flexiiform has deployed a synchronous technical solution, combining steel structure, tensile membrane and automatic mechanical system.
Arch and Rail Structure System
The structural solution is a system of parallel arched trusses that span the skylight aperture. These trusses both support the load and act as a frame for the membrane panels. The truss system is mounted on load-bearing rollers and moves along a rail system that is fixed on both sides of the skylight, ensuring smooth and precise operation.
PVDF Stretch Film Material
The chosen cladding material is PVDF membrane. This is a lightweight material, which helps reduce the load on the mechanical system and the building structure. The translucent properties of PVDF allow natural light to diffuse into the space below, creating a bright, pleasant environment. More importantly, the soft surface of the membrane has the ability to absorb sound, effectively reducing echoes, very suitable for large public spaces such as hospital lobbies. This is an effective application of architectural stretch canvas.
Automatic Operation Mechanism
The system is operated by an electric motor, controlling the opening/closing of the canopy synchronously through a central control panel. All the canopy arches will slide and fold to one side when opened, returning the entire open space to the skylight. When closed, the membrane panels stretch to form a completely sealed, waterproof canopy, protecting the space below.
Results and Performance Evaluation
Project Skylight sliding roof Upon completion, it has brought a remarkable upgrade in functionality and convenience to Bangkok Hospital:
- About flexibility: Providing proactive control of space, allowing the central lobby to be used for a variety of purposes, from a casual waiting area to an event venue.
- About safety and comfort: The tensile membrane solution eliminates the risk of broken glass materials, while creating a space with better light and acoustic quality, providing comfort for users.
- About acoustic performance: The echo in the large hall has been significantly reduced, creating a quieter and more suitable environment for the hospital.
- Aesthetically: The modern sliding roof system has brought a new, luxurious and high-tech look to the hospital's architecture, enhancing the brand image.
