Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover
In the new spa area, a Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover made of formTL includes a thin white membrane that protects bathers from the elements and prying eyes.
Radolfzell / Tübingen, October 2012. For 165 years, the old Graf-Eberhard Baths in Bad Wildbad, located in the north of the Black Forest, have been considered one of the most beautiful bathing temples in Europe. Built in 1847 directly over a hot spring, the baths have undergone various expansions and modernizations over the years.
The complex is characterized by the new Eberhard baths, a terraced structure from the 70s, which has been vacant for a number of years. These historic relaxation baths with 'Maurische Halle' (Moorish Rooms) and 'Fürstenbädern' (Prince's Baths) are now expanding their range of facilities with an external canvas-covered spa area.
Stunning landscape around the pool
The town of Bad Wildbad lies in the idyllic and narrow Enztal valley north of the Black Forest. Therefore, it was decided to use the empty external area of the 70s structure for the extension. Renowned Stuttgart architecture firm Kauffmann Theilig & Partner has created a welcoming spa landscape, characterized by warm wood tones, on the second and third floors of the terrace structure.
View Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover This is enhanced by specially selected lighting. Bathers can enter the new area via a wooden staircase leading up from the sauna courtyard within the historic baths. Here they find themselves in a polygonal wooden setting, with various sauna experiences on offer, before arriving at the highlight of the area: a new outdoor rooftop swimming pool offering swimmers enjoy an impressive view of the valley.
Reasons to install an outdoor pool cover
To prevent onlookers from nearby hotels and to provide privacy for sauna users, the entire north-facing side of the pool deck is covered by a fibrous membrane structure. Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover also provides protection from the weather, as well as framing views to the south and east of the valley.
The roof structure makes the outdoor swimming pool special
Despite the geometric and structural challenges, or rather because of them, the light structure appears to float. As structural engineers, formTL (membrane experts from Lake Constance), were responsible for the membrane roof project, from drafting the design to overseeing its actual construction.
Basic structure belong to Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover consists of a pre-tensioned membrane with three high points and lateral anchors. For effective protection from prying eyes, the membrane roof is tilted on its longest axis, forming some extreme geometric shapes: the construction includes some very steep areas and some very flat, the latter poses a particular challenge due to winter snow.
Furthermore, the high score rounds of Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover whose organic shape around the mast is geometrically perfectly integrated into the double curved membrane surface, providing an unobstructed view of the sky. The unusual length of the free front is unusual. Even on open ground, this construction will be a challenge.
However, the fact that the construction is carried out on an already existing structure in Bad Wildbad increases its level of difficulty. Both the membrane's protective layer and the pool's exterior Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover by Kauffmann, Theilig & Partner must all be planned with as little interference as possible with the existing construction.
When placing the feet and anchor points of Thermal Sauna Palais pool cover, extra care must be taken regarding the placement of beams on the floors below. With its complexity and sophistication, this construction can compete with any challenging large-scale project in membrane specialists formTL's portfolio of Thermal Sauna Plais pool covers
