The Gallery Serpentine Sackler canopy blends the old with the new

The building is covered with a modern new three-layer load-bearing fabric that perfectly blends the existing architecture of the 19th century with the ultra-modern architecture of the 21st century.

The new space has a restaurant and social space with an ephemeral feel to it. The aim is to create a place that will become a destination.

In a September article published in Dezeen Magazine, Zaha Hadid talks about the contrast between the old and the new. “We don't look forward as much as we look back,” she said. It is necessary that it can sometimes be suitable and adjacent to historical buildings. The idea here was to really demonstrate that you can have these two worlds, which are new and old, and then the garden and the park come together seamlessly. ”

Although the structure looks temporary in nature adjacent to the 19th century building, but Serpentine Sackler gallery canopy is a permanent, fully enclosed multi-functional addition to the Serpentine Gallery.

When asked about using fabric as a construction medium, Zaha Hadid said: “The idea here is to use a new material – load-bearing structures – and look at domes and shell structures to achieve a lightweight contemporary project.

Unlike other construction media, fabric can create dynamic undulating shapes, and this building truly showcases what is possible with load-bearing fabric structures from Architen Landrell.

The intricate design of the Serpentine Sackler gallery canopy

The free-flowing cone structure itself Serpentine Sackler gallery canopy was incredibly complex in design, including five elliptical enameled straps (to transmit light), five tapering columns (structural support), dual curvature (in all directions) and a tactile shape. ground at two points.

Frameless glass walls surrounding the building create the illusion that the roof is floating above the space.

PTFE was chosen for the outer layer because of its longevity, class 0 fire rating and self-cleaning properties. Below the PTFE is an insulating fireproof layer of Firefly Vulcan and Expert 50, followed by an inner layer of Atex 2000 Silicone Coated Glass. Each layer covers about 538m2 of surface area. The three-layer insulation system has a U-Value of 0.18 and meets Section L Requirements.

As a company, Architen Landrell is very proud to have worked on such an impressive and stunning project and we look forward to experiencing the new showroom for ourselves and hearing the public's reaction to with new space.

Zaha Hadid's projects always attract media attention and this one will certainly do the same, highlighting fabric as the design and construction material of this century.
