What is an office walkway canopy?
Located on the north lawn of the United Nations campus, in New York City, the United Nations Interim Stage is a Porte Cochere, designed by FTL Design Engineering Studio. The structure is located adjacent to the new temporary UN General Assembly building, designed by HLW International. The design serves as an entrance booth and security screen for convention delegates. The structure is envisioned as a relocatable building, intended to be moved to another part of the campus once renovations are completed. Joe Schedlbauer, Amedeo Perlas: The design explores lightness as a visual, physical and sustainable approach, using minimal materials to reduce its environmental impact. FTL seeks to build responsive structures containing inspiring spaces where buildings, nature and people can meet. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the canopy is embedded within the campus landscape using the site's contours as visual buffers. Spiral arches curl and curve the length of the roadway gently peeling away from the main building.

The renovation of the historic United Nations buildings is planned as a five-year project. Due to the temporary nature of the temporary buildings, the environmental impact and sustainability of Porte Cochere were of primary concern to the UN and were considered from the outset of the design process. Recognizing these concerns, FTL introduced the concept of portability. Why recycle parts when you can recycle the entire structure?

The Porte Cochere may be transferred to another location within the UN premises or to any other location of the UN's choosing. With this as a starting point, the design was developed to have minimal anchorage points and be modular, using prefabricated steel trusses allowing for quick installation, minimizing the impact of construction teams on the construction site.
The function of high-tech textile membrane is twofold; it provides support as a tensile element that evenly distributes structural loads and reduces sunlight to naturally illuminate the space below. The structure uses two types of fabric, a Teflon-coated glass fabric as the main fabric and a silicone-coated glass fabric to give more opacity to the domes.
Functionally, the canopy provided shelter for motorcades as they loaded and unloaded, requiring ventilation for the cars idling inside. Open facades and linear vents running the length of the truss allow fresh air to circulate freely throughout the enclosure.

Porte Cochere provides an elegant counterpoint to the architectural elements located in this area. This temporary addition to the site's long history is at the same time a hint of ideas that speak not only to the present but also to the future possibilities of the United Nations, its mission and what humanity can achieve.
