Design of stretch canvas material for the research institute dome
As a chemical industry research laboratory, the building needs to have research areas to conduct a variety of experiments, including heavy testing and sophisticated research. The laboratories are served by spaces used for administration, researchers, and technical services. The “heavy” research and experimental program is not fixed and must be allowed to develop in the future.
The final location chosen, Venafro in Southern Italy, is a large valley surrounded by hills, fields and traditional buildings.
The stretched canvas structure of the research institute's dome
A lightweight tent-like form emerged from the first sketches and evolved into a roughly oval form, 85 m long by 32 m long, creating a single volume covered by a lightweight structure 15 m high and supported by symmetrical metal mesh arches held by six vertical suspension cables.
This space, illuminated by the transparency of the membrane, as well as by the steel frame and arched windows at the perimeter, is used for both types of research.
The structure is placed in the center of an oval reflecting pool, designed to ensure security, regulate heat and enhance the form and landscape with its reflection and coolness. Enclosed research areas as well as offices are completely air-conditioned.

The membrane is made of PVC-coated polyester, stretched between metal domes. At its base, a cable holds the legs to domes positioned in the pool.
The junction between the membrane and the metal perimeter half-dome is made of PVC material The flexible transparent is fixed to the perimeter of the half dome and to the main suspension cable of the membrane.
