Tensile Facade PVDF Application for King Fahad National Library project
King Fahad National Library, a major cultural project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, after 5 years of construction, was completed in November 2013. This project was completed by Professor Eckhard Gerber and his Gerber Architekten team. wall. The project has two sides adjacent to two main traffic arteries of Riyadh city - King Road and Olaya. In front of the building is a square combined with a large flower garden, a place for entertainment for area residents.
The project includes an existing library building and a new construction, 5 stories high. The old block has a cross-shaped plan, with a dome in the center. The newly built building block has a floor plan like a hollow box, surrounding the old block, under a common roof, creating a "building within a building" style.
This is one of the most important works in urban and cultural development projects in the capital Riyadh. It is an intersection between the modernity of materials and advanced construction techniques while still retaining the Arabic cultural identity.
Structural overview of Tensile Facade PVDF
The special thing about this complex of buildings is the appearance of the surface of the new building block. The entire surrounding glass wall is coordinated with Tensile Facade PVDF covering membrane - a system of special, white, diamond-shaped fabric panels, supported by a steel cable structure, bearing tensile force in three dimensions. Like sunshades, half open, half closed, covering the outside of the glass door system to shield harsh sunlight.
This Tensile Facade PVDF cover was also calculated and optimized by the architect according to the apparent movement of the sun locally, helping to properly distribute light throughout the entire library space. This structure can withstand radiation from sunlight and outside temperatures up to 50 °C in the summer.
More specifically, this Tensile Facade PVDF membrane is also combined with a lighting system, so that at night, the building's facade will stand out in soft white light. King Fahad National Library is a modern library building, a special environment that encourages the exchange of knowledge and is considered a cultural beacon of the city of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
