Giraffes have long been a popular attraction at zoos worldwide. They are the world's tallest land mammals, and their size can pose special challenges in caring for them outside of their typical environments.
Just like humans, animals can be sensitive to harsh weather conditions and prefer to avoid direct sunlight during the heat of the day. So after a year of public fundraising, the giraffes at the Buffalo Zoo in Buffalo, NY now have their own shade.

The Sumatran tiger is one of the rarest tiger subspecies with a remaining wild population of about 300 individuals. Due to a combination of poaching, habitat loss and conflict with humans, the Sumatran tiger population has suffered a staggering decline over the past decade, placing it at high risk of extinction on the IUCN Red List.
ZSL London Zoo has been working globally in a major effort to improve the fate of Sumatran tigers, culminating in its new flagship facility 'Tiger Territory'. Not only does it enable the zoo to embark on a vital breeding programme, 'Tiger Territory' also allows experts to gain valuable information about elusive creatures that can be applied to projects conservation on the ground.
Tiger Territory is intended to be a hub for matchmaking of Sumatran tigers from around the world, with the first residents expected to be Jae Jae and Melati. Selected by a global breeding program for critically endangered species and considered Europe's most genetically important pair of Sumatran tigers, their cubs will be the first to be born in ZSL London Zoo for over 15 years.
For a project of such global significance, the investor has great interest in the new zoo structure. The main focus is on animal welfare, conservation and creating the perfect environment for living things – rather than creating an architectural masterpiece while still meeting the needs of visitors.
Key goals were outlined with a group of conservationists, tiger breeders and education experts. From a habitat perspective, the zoo enclosure obviously needs to be generous in proportion, especially in terms of height – the Sumatran tiger is a keen climber with a preference for observing its terrain from a single point Tall and can boast an impressive vertical jump of up to five meters.
The facility must also meet strict husbandry requirements and be suitable for daily use by zookeepers. The possibility of future additions must be taken into account as well as the sustainability of the enclosure. From the visitor's perspective, it was important to provide a spectacular viewing experience with multiple perspectives, including a prominent, visible platform for the education department to deliver talks. All of this needed to be achieved within the existing constraints of the 186-year-old site and neighboring architecture.

A unique property of the stretch canvas system and other stretch canvas systems is their high durability, light weight and extremely large load capacity. Creating large, free-span roofs with tensile strength minimizes the amount of supporting steel needed to construct safe and comfortable living environments, resulting in efficient construction.

The stretch canvas structure is highly durable and able to withstand harsh weather conditions and animal interaction. They provide an unmatched extended product life compared to traditional roofing and do not require additional materials or large construction crews to maintain. This is especially common in wild environments, where wildlife is protected and interference at construction sites needs to be kept to a minimum.
